Festa della Salute – Devotion, history and tradition in the most authentic Venice
On November 21, Venice gathers together for one of the most heartfelt and profound moments of its calendar: Festa della Salute. Unlike the more well-known and touristic events, this celebration is a manifestation of popular faith, moving and sincere, which involves the entire city.
A vow, a basilica, a centuries-old tradition
The festival was born in 1630, when Venice was struck by a terrible plague epidemic. The Venetian Senate vowed to the Madonna to build a great temple in her honor, if the city was freed from the disease.
The plague ended, and from that promise was born the marvelous Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, a baroque masterpiece designed by Baldassarre Longhena, today one of the symbolic buildings of Venice, solemnly overlooking the entrance to the Grand Canal.
Every year, on November 21, thousands of faithful cross the votive bridge that connects Campo Santa Maria del Giglio to the basilica, built temporarily for the occasion, to light a candle, pray, or simply say thank you.
A tradition that resists time, in silence and with dignity, in the heart of the city.
