Every year, on the first Sunday of September, the Grand Canal is transformed into a water theater, where history, sport and entertainment blend together in the magic of the Historical Regatta, one of the most exciting and iconic events in the Venetian calendar.
More than a simple competition, the Regatta is a celebration of the Venetian soul, a collective celebration that has its roots in the ancient Republic of Venice.
A dive into the past: the historical parade
The day opens with a spectacular parade of historic boats, faithfully reconstructed and decorated with bright colors, flags and coats of arms. The rowers parade in Renaissance costume, recalling the great official parades of the Doge and the Serenissima.
The “bissone” (parade boats) glide majestically across the water, amidst the applause of the public gathered along the banks. A true journey through time, free and open to all, which enchants thousands of visitors every year.
Historical curiosity: the origins of the regatta date back to the 13th century, when nautical competitions served to train the sailors of the Venetian fleet.
The race: pure adrenaline in Venetian style
After the parade, the show becomes competitive: it is time for the Venetian rowing races, the ancient standing rowing technique, practiced only in the lagoon. The competing categories range from the very young to expert champions, who challenge each other on different types of traditional boats such as gondolas, caorline and pupparini.
A succession of emotions, colors and shouts of encouragement that animate the entire Grand Canal, from Ca’ Foscari to Ca’ Vendramin Calergi, the arrival point.
